In Iceland, we are always waiting for summer. In fact, sometimes we wait for summer all "summer" long. On the first Thursday after the 18th of April every year, the wait is over and we celebrate the first day of summer in Iceland, even if the weather disagrees. On that day, there is an old tradition to give a sumargjöf or "summer gift" in English.

Chef Gísli Matthías Auðunsson comes from the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland and lives with his wife Hafdís Ástþórsdóttir and four children in Helgafellsbraut on the main island. The family has two volcanoes in their backyard: Helgafell and Eldfell. Gísli’s family founded and runs the restaurant Slippurinn (The Boatyard) in the Westman Islands.

Valdís Steinarsdóttir has been researching new ways of manufacturing clothing. 

James Merry is a visual artist from the UK, now based in Iceland. He is primarily known for his hand embroidery, metalwork and mask-making, and has collaborated with institutions such as the V&A, Gucci, The Royal School of Needlework, Iris van Herpen, Tim Walker and Tilda Swinton.

Ranger Helga Hvanndal has worked in remote areas all over the country.  She describes the time when she lived completely alone in Dyrhólaey Lighthouse and the feelings she experienced travelling in the Icelandic wilderness.
