Down and Fur

All real fur used in 66°North products is from the Finnish auction house Saga Furs. Saga Furs is the only fur seller in the industry with a supplier certification and auditing programme on the environment and animal health and welfare.

The Saga Certification system has been in place since 2005 and during this time, the scheme has been developed in cooperation with the industry, Finnish authorities, the EU as well as veterinarians specialised in fur farming. The certification’s main criteria are the following:

  1. Animal well-being and health
  2. Conditions for rearing animals
  3. Farm hygiene
  4. Breeding
  5. Environmental Management
  6. Feed Management
  7. Training and preparing for exceptional situations

The Saga Furs Traceability System (STS) is a chain of custody documentation that provides transparency and traceability in the value chain. The system enables Saga Furs’s suppliers, the manufacturers, to trace the origin of the pelt lots down to individual farms allowing Saga Furs to verify the origin and location of the skins for each lot. The system furthermore discloses the proportion of certified farms, dates of farm certification and the countries of origin.

All down used in 66°North products is from our long-term partner in Germany which holds certificates for Responsible Down Standards, Downpass and The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.

Responsible Down Standard ensures that down and feathers come from ducks and geese that have been treated well. This means enabling them to live healthy lives, express innate behaviours, and not suffer from pain, fear or distress. The standard also follows the chain of custody from farm to product, so consumers can be confident that the down and feathers in the products they choose are truly RDS.

Products with the Downpass label stand for high quality and the assurance that the down and feathers used as the filling material were ethically harvested and come from a strictly controlled and traceable supply chain.

The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is an independent testing and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products at all stages of production. Examples for items eligible for certification: Raw and dyed/finished yarns, raw and dyed/finished fabrics and knits, ready-made articles (all types of clothing, domestic and household textiles, bed linen, terry cloth items, textile toys and more).
