Askja

AskjaAskja is an active volcano in the Odadahraun area, north of the Vatnajokull glacier. Askja formed during a period of intense volcanic activity. A magma chamber beneath Askja emptied back into the earth during successive eruptions, which has caused the floor of the crater to sink.

In 1875, Askja erupted so violently it rivaled its formation 10,000 years ago. Around 20 billion cubic yards of volcano material was ejected within a few hours. As activity receded, the roof of the magma chamber collapsed by a further 820 ft. In time, the graben (rift valley) filled with water and became known as Lake Askja. At 656 ft. deep, Lake Askja is the deepest lake in Iceland.

The landscape around this beautiful mountain lake touches the heart of anyone who sees it. Lava, wilderness and mountains over 5.000 ft. high make Lake Askja an unforgettable setting with a few worldly rivals.
