Reach the Top

66°NORTH and Icelandic Mountain Guides join forces again to offer their hugely popular training programme, "Reach the Top with 66°NORTH and Icelandic Mountain Guides". This is the fifth year that the programme has given people the opportunity to climb Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest peak in Iceland (2110 m or 6920 ft), on the southern part of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier.

New products have found their way to the shelves in 66°North's shops in the past few weeks. This comes with the fall season and the reaction has been great. The garments of 66°North are based on a long standing tradition and the brand is thus very well known. 66°North's Video Contest is now going strong in Iceland's elementary schools. The company is setting this up but the idea comes from Mr. Sigurjon Sighvatsson, a successful Hollywood film maker and owner of 66°North. A light jacket that surprises

Just recently a new line of coats that are named Langjokull entered the stores of 66°North. These are light jackets for men and women that are filled with PrimaLoft® insulation. Last fall, 66°North became the first among Icelandic outdoor wear companies to use PrimaLoft® insulation, when jackets named Vatnajokull were introduced. The receiving that Vatnajokull got was beyond all expectations, and thus it will be interesting to see how the Langjokull jackets will fare.

It’s no surprise adventurers are drawn to 66°North when seeking support for their expeditions. 66°North never hesitates to help when it can. Marta Gudjonsdottir’s commendable trek across the Greenland Glacier in support of the Icelandic Cancer Society, Leifur Arnar Svavarsson’s climb of Mt. Cho Oyu and other mountains and the epic 5 Peaks climb earlier this year by dozens of enthusiastic Icelanders are just a few examples that come to mind.

The jacket is both a cutting edge garment and very original in its design. 66°NORTH is the first Icelandic clothing manufacturer to use PrimaLoft® insulation in outdoor wear. PrimaLoft® is a microfiber insulation that was developed for the US military as an alternative to down filling, since the down loses its insulating abilities if it gets wet.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark wears 66°NORTH

Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, went on a summer tour recently to Skagen in North Jutland with his wife, Crown Princess Mary and their two children, Christian and Isabella. While there, the family took a long walk on the beach with several family friends. Mary kept warm during the walk with a black Laugavegur down vest from 66°NORTH.

Mel Gibson was recently on holiday in Iceland with his two sons.He was spotted wearing a black Tindur Technical jacket while playing golf. Gibson is not the only celebrity that is a fan of our products. Advancing in Denmark and Greenland

66°NORTH will open a new 300 square metre (3300 square feet) store in Nørreport, Copenhagen, in the coming fall. It will also open a shop inside the Magasin du Nord department store in Århus, Jutland. This is only part of the advance of 66°NORTH in Denmark. Recently, the company signed a sales contract with the Danish Army for outdoor clothes.

Fabric from coconut shell

The first of three glaciers!

Last Saturday, 150 participants from the programme “Reach The Top With 66°NORTH” climbed the Snaefellsjokull Glacier (1446 m/ 4740 feet). Snaefellsjokull was the first of three glaciers the group will climb, in preparations for climbing Hvannadalshnjukur, Iceland’s highest peak, at the beginning of summer.

66°NORTH will provide two Danish explorers with clothing from top to toe on their attempt to set a world record in crossing the ice cap of Greenland without any support. Great response to the Hvannadalshnúkur tour

Over 300 people attended the promotional meeting held yesterday by 66°NORTH and Icelandic Mountain Guides regarding the mountaineering of Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest peak of Vatnajökull Glacier. There is a great interest in the tour and the training programme and over 160 people have already signed up for the adventure. If everything goes to plan, the group will reach Hvannadalshnúkur peak in two groups, the first group on May 31st and the second on June 7th.

Tarantino and Eli Roth bundle up, Icelandic style

American movie directors Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth came to Iceland on the 27th of December to celebrate the New Year. They must have read the bleak weather forecast for New Year's Eve, because one of the first things they did when they arrived, was to go to the 66°NORTH shop in Bankastraeti, downtown Reykjavik, and invest in some seriously warm and stylish outdoor clothes.

Mr. and Ms. Terminator don 66°NORTH

California state governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver will receive outdoor wear from 66°NORTH as Christmas gifts. A Hollywood costume designer who is an acquaintance of Sigurjon Sighvatsson, a movie producer and co-owner of 66°NORTH, contacted him recently when she found it difficult to source a down parka in a size she needed. The parka which had to be large, was meant to be a Christmas present for the Terminator actor himself.

It's not only Icelanders who have realized the excellent quality of 66°North outdoor wear. The company's reputation has traveled far, and a recent addition to the group of 66°North's happy customers are Ron and Kelly Meyer. Ron Meyer is the CEO of the film company Universal Pictures.

66°NORTH provides outerwear for the upcoming Imax movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth, staring Brendan Fraser. It is to be released in June 2008. The New Line Cinema version of the Jules Verne classic will feature our Glymur Women's Softshell as well as backpacks.

66°NORTH has founded 66°NORTH USA, a wholly owned subsidiary, to handle the affairs of the company in the North American market. In the past five years, the company had an American distributor, who took care of distribution and sales in the USA and Canada. 66°NORTH has decided not to continue that arrangement, and instead to open a dedicated subsidiary with offices in New York.

5 Peaks is a group of people who are going to walk to the highest peak in each section of Iceland (total of 5 peaks) in just one weekend to raise money for Sjónarhóll a centre for children with long term diseases and disabilities and their parents. No one in the group is an experienced mountain climber so this is a very challenging mission.

66°NORTH sponsors cancer survivor walking on 66°North over Greenland.

Marta Gudmundsdottir is now walking across the Greenland glacier, along the 66°North latitude line, raising money for the Iceland Cancer Society. A few months ago Marta herself finished therapy for breast cancer. Her mission is to raise money for cancer research and raise awareness of the importance of regular cancer screening.

Two Ads Nominated for the IMARK Prize

The annual advertising contest of IMARK (Iceland’s Association of Marketing Professionals) was held on March 2nd. Two advertisements from 66°NORTH were nominated: The ad “Cold War” in the newspaper category, and “Patreksfjordur” in the magazine category. This is the third consecutive year that the current advertising campaign has been nominated in the contest. All in all, it has been nominated twelve times and has received five prizes.

On January 18, 2007, the Prime Minister of Iceland, Geir Haarde, presented the Icelandic Website Awards at an elegant gathering in the old Idno Theater in downtown Reykjavik. The 66°NORTH website was nominated for the award.
