Reach the Top
66°NORTH and Icelandic Mountain Guides join forces again to offer their hugely popular training programme, "Reach the Top with 66°NORTH and Icelandic Mountain Guides". This is the fifth year that the programme has given people the opportunity to climb Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest peak in Iceland (2110 m or 6920 ft), on the southern part of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier.
The programme is in two parts.
- Lectures and workshops, where participants are educated about nutrition, clothing, equipment, safety and environmental responsibility.
- Fifteen climbs designed to build the participants' knowledge, physical fitness and experience before attempting Hvannadalshnjúkur.
Training begins in February and concludes with the ascent of the peak in May. Last year about 120 people stood on Iceland´s highest peak having taken part in the "Reach the Top with 66°NORTH and Icelandic Mountain Guides" training programme.
The two companies focus on environmental awareness and work hard to use the event as an opportunity to educate climbers on the issue of global warming and its effects on Iceland's glaciers. Icelandic Mountain Guides have years of experience in guiding, while 66°NORTH is a market leader in the development of outdoor clothing that enables mountain climbers to enjoy the outdoors, in even the harshest conditions.
