The first of three glaciers!
150 people in the programme Reach the Top With 66°North climbed Snaefellsjökull
Last Saturday, 150 participants from the programme “Reach The Top With 66°NORTH” climbed the Snaefellsjokull Glacier (1446 m/ 4740 feet). Snaefellsjokull was the first of three glaciers the group will climb, in preparations for climbing Hvannadalshnjukur, Iceland’s highest peak, at the beginning of summer. The “Reach The Top With 66°NORTH” training programme has been a great success and the group is in high spirits. Mt. Snaefellsjokull is a glacier covered strato-volcano which, for a long time, was thought to be the highest mountain in Iceland. The highest peaks of the glacier are three crags that stand on the edge of the crater and are called Jokulthufur (glacier crags). The last volcanic eruption of Snaefellsjokull was around 1800 years ago. The glacier has reduced greatly in size in recent years because of climate change, and is now around 11 sq km (4.2 sq m).
