The Icelandic athletes competing at the Winter Olympics from February 12-18 in Vancouver will be wearing clothes from 66°North.

Every year, 66°North gives out two expedition grants worth 500,000 ISK each to individuals or groups. The grants are both clothes for the expedition, and money up to 200,000 ISK.

66°North has been introducing its new summer collection during the past month. The collection has gotten great reviews especially at the OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen Germany.

130 reached the top of Hvannadalshnjukur on May 31st, and 80 more climbed the peak on June 14th.

Last Saturday, 150 participants from the programme “Reach The Top With 66°NORTH” climbed the Snaefellsjokull Glacier (1446 m/ 4740 feet). Snaefellsjokull was the first of three glaciers the group will climb, in preparations for climbing Hvannadalshnjukur, Iceland’s highest peak, at the beginning of summer.

The team at 66°NORTH is exceptionally busy at the moment as it prepares to present its new winter collection to the international market. Over the next few weeks, 66°NORTH will attend three outdoor activity expositions; the OR expo in Salt Lake City, Utah, the ISPO in Munich, Germany, and the SIA show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

California state governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver will receive outdoor wear from 66°NORTH as Christmas gifts. A Hollywood costume designer who is an acquaintance of Sigurjon Sighvatsson, a movie producer and co-owner of 66°NORTH, contacted him recently when she found it difficult to source a down parka in a size she needed. The parka which had to be large, was meant to be a Christmas present for the Terminator actor himself.

66°NORTH provides outerwear for the upcoming Imax movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth, staring Brendan Fraser. It is to be released in June 2008. The New Line Cinema version of the Jules Verne classic will feature our Glymur Women's Softshell as well as backpacks.

Quentin Tarantino director and huga fan of 66°North products posed for the British Telegraph magazine last week wearing the Videy hat from 66°North Iceland. Tarantino was also sporting the hat during an interview on the Jonathan Ross talk show on BBC.

66°NORTH has founded 66°NORTH USA, a wholly owned subsidiary, to handle the affairs of the company in the North American market. In the past five years, the company had an American distributor, who took care of distribution and sales in the USA and Canada. 66°NORTH has decided not to continue that arrangement, and instead to open a dedicated subsidiary with offices in New York.

5 Peaks is a group of people who are going to walk to the highest peak in each section of Iceland (total of 5 peaks) in just one weekend to raise money for Sjónarhóll a centre for children with long term diseases and disabilities and their parents. No one in the group is an experienced mountain climber so this is a very challenging mission.

The annual advertising contest of IMARK (Iceland’s Association of Marketing Professionals) was held on March 2nd. Two advertisements from 66°NORTH were nominated: The ad “Cold War” in the newspaper category, and “Patreksfjordur” in the magazine category. This is the third consecutive year that the current advertising campaign has been nominated in the contest. All in all, it has been nominated twelve times and has received five prizes.

Polartec, the world’s leading manufacturer of fleece fabric, has introduced a revolutionary new product: The corn-oil fleece. Polartec has teamed with the Icelandic outdoor wear company 66°NORTH for the international introduction of the new fabric.

On January 18, 2007, the Prime Minister of Iceland, Geir Haarde, presented the Icelandic Website Awards at an elegant gathering in the old Idno Theater in downtown Reykjavik. The 66°NORTH website was nominated for the award. Sjoklaedagerdin 66°Nordur - the parent company of the 66°NORTH brand - celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. More than 300 people work for the company, which has retail outlets and manufacturing facilities in several countries. The design and marketing of 66°NORTH has generated considerable publicity widely, and received awards both in Iceland and internationally.

Icelandic outdoor wear company 66°NORTH increases its activities with the opening of a new store in Latvia, where it is already prominent in garment production and retail. The company is Iceland’s largest manufacturer of outdoor and work clothing.

In January 2006, 66°NORTH won the silver award for its print campaign in the category for "Clothing and Fabrics" at Epica - European Creative Awards. The same campaign won the gold award in the same category in January 2005. 

The GQ-sponsored Grand Opening event on November 16th was packed with fashion and music editors, Richard Wiese, Michael Strahan, Dr. Ian Smith (VH1), model Thelma Thormarsdottir and lots of Icelanders who felt right at home with photographs of Icelandic scenery running on the 25 foot high walls and in the Icelandic lava graveled lounge. 

66°NORTH partners with the Sundance Channel for their exclusive VIP party at the annual Sundance Film Festival, Tuesday January 24th, 2006. 66°NORTH went beyond the snowy mountain-tops of Park City, Utah with its Kaldi Arctic hat keeping producers, directors, screen-writers and celebrities warm at this year’s festival. This classic American event was a showcase that merged cinema and style. 

66°NORTH will be outfitting the Mount Washington Ski Patrol an organisation not unlike its home-based sponsored Icelandic Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) teams. The Mt. Washington Ski Patrol traverses on the most dangerous mountain range on the east coast.  Supporting this extreme, backcountry ski patrol in 66°NORTH's arctic tested Icelandic performance outerwear is a natural testing extension into the ski community.
